Nicki Minaj graces the Feb./Mar issue of VIBE magazine. Read some excerpts from the interview as Minaj speaks about not having fun recording her album Pink Friday, getting her way in the industry, and being accepted by the fashion world.

VIBE: You’ve said before that you didn’t really have fun recording Pink Friday.

Nicki Minaj: I felt like I had something to prove to everyone who said a female rapper could not make an album unless she was talking about her pussy. And so I went above and beyond to prove that I could not talk about sex and not talk about my genitalia and still have a successful album. And I proved that. And now my time for proving things to my critics is over. I don’t really need to prove anything to anyone else anymore.

Getting her way in the industry

Is it still hard to get your way as a woman in this industry?

It’s not hard to get your way when it’s your way or the highway. People either follow suit or they’re not around. I don’t really like the sound of that, ‘cause that sounds like a temper tantrum. I’m just very black and white when it comes to my business. There’s really no gray area. I really don’t have a lot of small talk with people I work with. It’s pretty much let’s get the job done. In the beginning, if people didn’t know me they’d probably assume I wasn’t smart or wasn’t business savvy. But once you sit and talk to me, it’s a different story.

Being accepted in the fashion world.

You were heavy on the fashion scene last year around Fashion Week with Anna Wintour. Do you feel like you’ve been accepted by the fashion world?

Yeah, I realized more recently that even if it’s for a fashion magazine, I’m not gonna change who I am. When I was doing photo shoots last year, I kept on being told, “This is what we want your hair to look like and this is what we want you to look like,” and it really, really stifled my creativity. So the other day I was talking to a photographer, and he said, “You know what, I like your everyday looks so much better than when you do photo shoots for magazines.” And I was like, “So do I, you’re absolutely right.” I’d been getting more and more frustrated for a while.

But I’ve made up my mind that when you see a Nicki Minaj magazine cover from now on, it’s really going to reflect me and it’s going to be something that I creatively had a hand in, because I don’t have to do it anymore. I don’t have to do things just to please people. It’s okay to do what I love because what I love, my fans love. And they’re really the only ones that should matter. The fashion world will have to come to Nicki Minaj, as opposed to Nicki Minaj trying to go to the fashion world.

So is it safe to assume that you were always interested in fashion?
I’ve always been intrigued by color and by interesting hair. I was one of those weird little girls doing my own hair at the age of 9. I was, like, getting weird gels and new brushes and cornrow holders. I would tweak and perm at the age of 13. When I first went to get my hair colored, I was about 14 and I wanted blonde highlights. The beautician said, “No, you have to get your mother on the phone,” and I was just crying and begging. I’ve always been experimenting. Cyndi Lauper’s videos—that’s what intrigued me.

 

And you definitely use your looks to get noticed.
I like the idea of doing something that everyone else is not. I get high off that. Just the idea that other people don’t have the balls to do something—that’s my thing.

Adele graces the March issue of US Vogue magazine. Adele is showing no signs of slowing down.  She is currently the only ARTIST to have a number one album on the Billboard 200 concurrently with three number one singles, namely,  ”Rolling in the Deep”, “Someone Like You”, and “Set Fire to the Rain”.  The ‘Rumour Has It” crooner is scheduled to perform at the GRAMMYs tomorrow night (Feb 12th).

What Do you think she should perform ? A New song ? Or a medley.

If Lana Del Rey keeps this up, she will be on the cover of every single magazine cover except Men’s Health by the end of the year. She also nabbed the cover of British Vogue and now she has the proud honor of being photographed by the amazing Ellen Von Unwerth who has worked with Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Von Unwerth shot Lana for the cover of  Lovecat magazine which you can check out below.

The sexy Meagan Good covers the latest issue of VIBE Vixen where she talks about her love life, wanting to play the role in a Whitney Houston biopic, and more. Read some excerpts below.

Meagan Good on her crazy moments in love:

I mean, when you find yourself walking out on the side of freeway in a different state at three o’clock in the morning because someone has pissed you off, and you are completely convinced that you’re walking to the airport that is over an hour away, you’ve pretty much lost your marbles there. [Laughs] Yeah, I’m not crazy like I’ll bust the windows out your car. I don’t like to be vindictive, but I am the type of person that’ll be like, ‘You know what? Nigga forget you, and I’ll be on my own!’ [Laughs] I’m one of those people who will mentally check out when I get so mad.”

Whitney Houston biopic role:

I want to do Whitney Houston’s life story. I think that would be an incredible story to do. I talked to Whitney a little bit about it, and she’s open to it, so I want to see what happens with that. Hopefully, in the very, very near future. She has Sparkle coming out, and I’ve heard good things about it already. I heard she looks beautiful, she sounds beautiful, she looks healthy and she’s the Whitney that we know and love. And so I think that would be a great place for her story to end and really just be beginning, if they were to do her life story right now.”

Lana Del Rey has sure got herself a great promotional team. Rey is yet to reach ‘Pop-Star’ stardom but she is already beating her Pop-peers by gracing the March issue of British Vogue. Read some excerpts from her interview below.

On Christopher Kane and Emilio de la Morena choosing her music to accompany their spring/summer 2012 shows:

I had no idea about the fashion shows. But I think they chose Video Games because it embodies summertime sadness. Fashion is inspired by youth and nostalgia and draws inspiration from the best of the past. I think both the song and the collections touch on the light and the dark side of life.

On her rise to musical stardom being almost accidental:

I was always singing, but didn’t plan on pursuing it seriously. When I got to New York City when I was 18, I started playing in clubs in Brooklyn – I have good friends and devoted fans on the underground scene, but we were playing for each other at that point – and that was it.

On choosing her stage name:

I wanted a name I could shape the music towards. I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba – Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue.

The pregnant singer Beyonce appears on the latest cover of Glamour Paris magazine. Beyonce is expecting her first child any day now.
