Hello everyone! My name is Martha Medina and I’m the latest recruit for Def Pen Radio. I will be writing about the latest news and contributing interviews with artists, designers and various personalities. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.
I’m a full time student majoring in Broadcast Journalism. I recently got a position as a reporter for a few magazines. This has given me the opportunity to cover many red carpet events, including the Oscars.

Young Money Monday’s: Review Of Shanell’s “A Taste Of Shanell aka SNL” EP

Young Money‘s own Shanell aka. SNL has a very promising music career ahead of her. Already having collaborated with Ne-Yo, Usher, Keri Hilson, penning songs for Danity Kane, Kelis, and also Lil Wayne‘s “Prom Queen” from the upcoming Rebirth album. SNL recently release a EP to give you “A Taste Of Shanell” featuring Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj & Aubrey O’ Day.

The EP start’s off with the sexy rock star feel Play In My Band which features Lil Wayne. Shanell brings her sassy sexy vibe while Wayne brings his witty lyrics to this urban rock produced track. “Can you make me sound like the strings you playing” Shanell sings on the break of the song which lets you know you have to be on point to play in her band.
Substitute Lover

On this very uptempo track Shanell admits to what alot of women have and that’s a substitute lover. This track stands out the most to me due to the creative concept and displays SNL’s writing capabilities.
Party All The Time

On this Maestro produced track Shanell collabs with former Danity kane member Aubrey on a remake of Eddie Murphy’s 1985 song . The concept pretty much stays the same while Shanell does pen a new bridge to the song. I’ve heard alot of remakes but the girls definitely holds it down on this one. Dope production as we’ll.
Handstand

This is my least favorite song on this EP. Shanell hooks up with fellow Young Money member Nicki Minaj. Songs like this just holds back SNL’s full potential, while this may be a song that works for Nicki it definitely doesn’t work too we’ll for Shanell.
Suckaz In Love

Shanell lets it be known she is not trying to fall like those suckers in love. Not only does this track display her writing talents but also displays her voice. Very solid track
Smoke Session

SNL & Wayne have a smoking session, Wayne talks about his “main squeeze” leaving him, while Shanell was hesitant to leave her other half but eventually gain the strength to do so.
Final Thoughts
This EP definitely gives you a taste of what Shanell has to offer. She brings the urban/pop rock as we’ll as a R&B vibe on some tracks. She’s definitely creating not only a new sound but a new genre as we’ll.
